One way to start practising equanimity is to reduce our self-centredness.
Through this, we'll be able to treat others more equally and see everyone (including ourselves) as equals.
HOW TO REDUCE SELF-CENTREDNESS IN OUR DAILY LIVES?
-
Be mindful when the following thoughts arise in ourselves. They are the arising of self-ego. Reflect and learn to dissolve the thoughts. :
-
Why I should do this for others?
-
Why am I always the one doing things for others?
-
I don’t want others’ help. I can do everything by myself.
-
-
Appreciate what others have done for us and have sense of gratitude to others
-
Appreciate that it is with the support of many causes and conditions that allow ourselves to be what we are today. Thus, we should be modest about ourselves.
-
In a living community
-
If we are able to relate to the Buddha’s teachings and reflect on ourselves, working together with others in a community is a good venue for us to learn to reduce our self-centredness
-
Always be considerate and respectful to one another
-
Learn to listen to others’ views and suggestions objectively
-
Appreciate differences and learn from one another
-
Always reflect on our selfishness, self-views, self-arrogance, hence reduce self-centredness
